Ive been working two jobs all the way through the year, but recently things have been picking up at the Triffid. Im now working 45 day weeks at the Triffid and trying to fit Starbucks in on top of it, so in order to put the effort, I need to into Uni something has to change. Before I get into what I want to do with myself this trimester, Ill explain what Ive been doing over the holidays. I saw a notable improvement in my compositions by the end of the holidays, several of which I plan to finish over the course of the trimester to use as projects. I also spent some time playing video games, in order to help my understanding of game composition as well as just to relax. I got the grades that I wanted to, but I left all my projects with a desire to improve. Dopevst Crate Digger Mod Projects WereMy fmod projects were a great start and I identified the issues I had with them that I will improve on over the course of the trimester. My post-production work taught me a lot about project management and the songs I created strengthened my songwriting and processings abilities. I finally felt that my processing was starting to reach the limits of my gear and that improving my tools would actually lead to improved results rather than me having all the gear and no idea. I already committed to getting Splices rent to own deal on Izotopes Ozone and Neutron, but as I was purchasing it I noticed that D16 have a rent to own deal on several of their effects, including a flanger and a nice multiband distortion, so I decided to get them as well. Whilst I am still only getting to grips with all of these products, the improvement to my productions has already been immense. I can see the potential for these tools to help shape all of my future mixes and I cant wait to become an expert with them. I spent too much time blogging and not enough time on project work, so for this trimester, I have set myself out a timeline for all the side projects I want to undertake. However, I will note that Im trying to work with almost every discipline, as I did last trimester, to improve my skills across the board. I am confident that with a large quantity of medium sized projects I will be able to tick off all my learning objectives as well as start to build an active online portfolio. Whilst quality is always at the front of my mind, quantity is the only way I will achieve some of the goals Ive set out for myself. I have a fairly decent understanding of how to get instruments in the mid-high range to sit well within the stereo field whilst still standing apart from each other. The only elements above 1820kHz in my mix are my cymbals, so fitting them together is fairly easy, though I still feel I have a bit more to learn. I find all my mixes have been very muddy, whilst I try to scoop out andor boost the clashing frequencies, the separation could still be clearer. The main way I am to tackle this is by using Neutrons masking function to identify the problem areas between the channels, which will hopefully improve my understanding to the point I can create well defined mixes without it. Ive been using it to define instruments for some time, however I want to gain a deeper understanding than just throwing it on and playing around with it, or preset swapping till I find something I like. In order to not only help improve my own workflow, but other Ableton users as well, I am going to create and release several free processing racks including; Quick Fades, White Noise Generator, and Multi-Band Processing. Ive already told Starbucks I can only work 1 day a week, so now I have almost every day to work on my projects, and the nights to work for a living.
